As the premier music organization for youth in the greater Capital Region of New York State, Empire State Youth Orchestras (ESYO) has offered an enriching education and performance program for talented young musicians for 32 years. Started as a single orchestra in 1979, today’s ESYO consists of 9 performing groups and a program of free, private, instrumental music lessons for low-income, inner-city youth. Coached and conducted by professionals, ESYO musicians annually give approximately 30 public performances in the best concert halls in the region and its youth orchestra regularly performs at Carnegie hall in New York and Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood (summer home of the Boston Symphony).
The ESYO Experience includes outstanding opportunities: collaborating with other music organizations, including the Albany Symphony Orchestra; participating in master classes; working with composers of note(most recently Korea/American Jin Hi Kim)；and giving back to the community. ESYO’s Youth Orchestra has helped raise over $6 million for Albany Medical Center’s pediatric cancer program by performing for 30 years in televised benefit concert. Smaller ensembles regularly perform at a variety of community events including recitals at local nursing homes.
ESYO’s Youth Orchestra has taken four European tours and has accepted an invitation to perform at the summer 2012 World Expo in Yeosu, South Korea, and at the US Army base in Seoul. ESYO has received three prestigious national awards for its adventurous programming from the American Society of Composers, Artists, and Publishers (ASCAP).
Funded partially by tuition from its members; the balance of ESYO’s operating budget comes from donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations. ESYO is a nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.
