the Tiffin Boys’ Choir

Since its foundation in 1957, the Tiffin Boys’ Choir has been one of the few state school choirs to have been continually at the forefront of the choral music scene in Britain. It has given the premiere performances of works by, among others, John Gardner, Christopher Brown, Elizabeth Poston and Antony Pitts, recorded widely for the major recording companies, and undertaken frequent concerts and tours in England and abroad.

The choir has worked with all the London orchestras and performs regularly with the Royal Opera. Recent engagements have included productions of Carmen (Antonio Pappano) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Richard Hickox), Boris Godunov with the Bolshoi Opera, Hänsel und Gretel (Sir Colin Davis), also broadcast on BBC2 TV, performances of Britten's War Requiem with Antonio Pappano, a series of a capella concerts at the Spoleto Festival and throughout Romania, Britten’s Spring Symphony (LSO/Harding) and Mahler’s Third Symphony with the LSO under Gergiev and the LPO under Rozhdestvensky. The choir enjoys a good relationship with the London Mozart Players, performing most recently Haydn's Creation.

The choir has made recordings of most of the orchestral repertoire that includes boys’ choir. Notable releases have included Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with Klaus Tennstedt, which was nominated for a Grammy Award, Il Trittico (Puccini), Werther (Massenet) and Tosca (Puccini) for EMI and Antonio Pappano, Billy Budd (Britten) with the LSO and Richard Hickox, Mahler's Third Symphony with the Philharmonia and Benjamin Zander, and Britten's War Requiem with the LPO and Kurt Masur. Recent releases include Mahler 3 (LSO/Gergiev), Carmina Burana (LSO/Hickox) and Owen Wingrave (CLS/Hickox).

Tiffin School is a state grammar school and specialist Performing Arts College in Kingston-upon-Thames, described by OFSTED as “exceptional”. Almost all the 1200 boys in the school play a musical instrument, and over 100 boys study Music at GCSE and A Level. The school has been closely connected with the formation and development of the National Youth Music Theatre. Several members of the choir have gained choral scholarships to Oxford and Cambridge, singing in the choirs of King's College, St John's College and New College.

In Summer 2008, the choir undertook a concert tour of Germany, including performing to an audience of 1300 in the Thomaskirche, Leipzig, and in February 2009 toured New Zealand to critical acclaim. A tour of Australia is planned for July 2011.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

And the raindrops tumble all around

Heaven opens a magic lane

When all the clouds darken up the skyway

Leading from your windowpane

Just a step beyond the rain

There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly

If birds fly over the rainbow

Why, then oh why can't I?

Some day I'll wish upon a star

And wake up where the clouds are far behind me 乌云都消失无踪,

Where troubles melt like lemon drops

Away above the chimney tops that's where you'll find me 我在天空逍遥。

If birds fly over the rainbow

Esti Dal

Peaceful woods, the dusk descending,

Fragrant now with summer's ending;

There I rested, and e'er sleeping

Praying, sought His sweet safe-keeping.

Thus I lay there, silent, praying;

Lord, I wander ever straying;

Wand'ring through the world, yet knowing.

Thou wilt guard me, and my going.

Let not darkness from Thee hide me,不要让黑暗误导我。

May Thine angels watch beside me.

Guard us all while we are sleeping,

Safe forever in Thy keeping,

Ever, ever, in Thy keeping.

Long Day Closes

No star is o'er the lake,

Its pale watch keeping,

The moon is half awake,

Through gray mist creeping,

The last red leaves fall round

The porch of roses,

The clock hath ceased to sound,

The long day closes.

Sit by the silent hearth

In calm endeavour,

To count the sounds of mirth,

Now dumb for ever.

Heed not how hope believes

And fate disposes:

Shadow is round the eaves,

The long day closes.

The lighted windows dim

Are fading slowly.

The fire that was so trim

Now quivers lowly.

Go to the dreamless bed

Where grief reposes;

Thy book of toil is read,

The long day closes.

BRITTEN The Golden Vanity

There was a ship came from the North Country,

A gallant ship, yes a gallant ship was she.

Her name (I believe) was the Golden Vanity,

And she sailed upon the Lowland Sea.

So one fine day in summer (I am told)

She sailed from part with a cargo in the hold

A treasure of ducats both silver and gold

To carry on the Lowland Sea.

She’d not sailed a league, or a league only three,

When up she came with a Turkish Galilee

That had no bus’ness (I’m sure you will agree)

On the waters of the Lowland Sea!

The Captain turned pale, and the Bosun was aghast

When the Skull and the Crossbones ran up the foreign mast:

I’m sure we shall be taken, taken by the foe!

And think of all the treasure lying here below!

Ha, ha, ha, ha! Ho, ho, ho, ho!

They think they’ll escape – no, never, no, no!

Turn about, or we’ll be taken, taken you shall see!

Oh whoever heard of Turkeys upon the Lowland Sea?

Ha, ha, ha, ha! Ho, ho, ho, ho!

We’ll follow them close wherever they go!

Full sail! And let us fly before the foe!

Oh think of all the treasure lying here below!

Then up spake the Bosun, up spake he:

Never shall the Turkeys take the Golden Vanity!

Brave fellow! What do you suggest?

To shoot ‘em from the water with a broad-side would be best –

Let us quickly man the cannon and put them to the test!

Brave fellow! We’ll do as you suggest, we’ll put them to the test! Gently now!

Mister Bosun, we’ll try a shot!

Stand by! Matches ready! Fire!

But alas! The brave attempt sadly came to naught:

For the range was too great and the shots they fell too short,

And while they were reloading the Pirates swang to port!

Belay there! Let’s give ‘em a shot!

Stand ready We’ll show ‘em how!

And with their superior Turkish Strategy

They shot away the mast of the Golden Vanity!

There was weeping, wailing, so dreadful for to see

As she floundered on the Lowland Sea!

I know we shall be taken, taken with the gold

And into Turkish slavery we shall all be sold.

Then up spake the Cabin boy, up spake he:

Sir… Your Honour… Magnificence… Your Worship… My Lord…

What will you give me if I sink the Turkish Galilee?

What will we give you if you sink the Turkish Galilee?

And the officers and men, they chortled in their glee.

Be silent! Very well, let’s hear what you suggest, now, what’s yer name?

What will you give me if I sink the Turkish Galilee?

What will I give you? Yes, what will you give me?

I see, well, let me think now –

I will give you silver, I will give you gold,

Enough and more to keep you till you grow old.

With nothing to warm me but silver and gold

What joy shall I find me in growing me old?

I will give you too what’s worth a good deal more –

My pretty little daughter that lives upon the shore,

For love of your daughter that lives upon the shore

I’ll adventure this and love her evermore.

I’ll think of a way to defeat the enemy,

And sink him in the Lowland Sea.

But the Bosun turned away and heaved a bitter sigh,

For on the Captain’s daughter he had set his eye!

Casting his clothes off he dived into the sea,

And swam like a fish so gallantly did he –

He swam till he came to the Turkish Galilee

As she lay in the Lowland Sea.

The Vanity lay at anchor like a fish upon a line

The Pirates laughing merrily then settled down to dine.

Meanwhile unseen the boy arrived, surfaced for a moment,

Then dived again below the Pirate brig,

And with a little spike three holes began to dig.

The Pirates, filling up with rum, did little know

The hold was filling up with water down below.

He came up for air, then once more took his chance

While overhead the Turkeys sang their song and then began to dance.

Some played cards and others played dice,

While the Cabin boy pierced the vessel thrice –

And the water flowed in and dazzled in their eyes!

Confusion struck into the foreign horde,

They climbed into the rigging and there with terror roared –

And all for the boy and the little holes he’d bored –

And they sank beneath the Lowland…

Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle – Must we all drown?

The waters gurgle up and the Turkeys gurgle down.

The Pirate ship no longer did annoy

The Golden Vanity who laughed and cried for joy

And in their mirth they forgot the Cabin boy

Adrift in the Lowland Sea.

Oh, Bosun… Oh, Captain… take me up… on board…

And give me… my fee… as good… as your word…!

Throw a rope! Throw a rope! For I’ve sunk the Galilee…

As she sailed upon the Lowland Sea.

I won’t take you up – there is no reward

His daughter for a cabin boy? No, that he can’t afford!

We’ll not throw a rope nor take you up on board,

Nor prove to you as good as our word!

To protect our gold no promise was too great,

But now our gold is safe, our promise we forget!

His strength began to falter and bitterly he cried –

I am drifting, I am failing, oh, pull me up the side!

And he leant upon his breast and swam round the side –

Oh mess-mates take me up for I’m sinking with the tide,

He slipped beneath a wave but he bore him up with hope

And he bore him up with courage, till no longer could he float.

And then, but only then, did the crew throw out a rope.

They laid him on the deck, but on the deck he died.

His mess-mates brushed away a tear and heavily they sighed.

He’d saved them and was murdered for the Captain and his gold!

As cold and cruel as the Lowland Sea!

We both turned away but found we couldn’t weep,

Ashamed of the promises we never did keep –

For the thought of the Cabin boy no more shall we sleep,

While we sail on the Lowland Sea.

They gently took him up from the deck where he died,

They wrapped him in his hammock that was so large and wide.

They sent him overboard to go with wind and tide,

And then to sink in the Lowland Sea.

Now should you pass today o’er the spot where he died

You still can hear the Cabin boy as on the day he cried:

Oh, mess-mates, take me up for I’m sinking with the tide!

As you sail upon the Lowland Sea!

I’m sinking in the Lowland Sea!

BRITTEN The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard

As it fell on one holy-day,

As many be in the year,

When young men and maids together did go

Their matins and mass to hear,

Little Musgrave came to the church-door—

The priest was at private mass—

But he had more mind of the fair women

Then he had of Our Lady’s grace.

The one of them was clad in green,

Another was clad in pall,

And then came in my Lord Barnard’s wife,

The fairest amongst them all.

Quoth she, ‘I have loved thee, Little Musgrave,

Full long and many a day.’—

‘So have I loved you, fair ladye,

Yet never word durst I say.’—

‘But I have a bower at Bucklesfordberry,

Full daintily it is dight;

If thou’lt wend thither, thou Little Musgrave,

Thou’s lig in my arms all night.’

With that beheard a little tiny page,

By his lady’s coach as he ran.

Says, ‘Although I am my lady’s foot-page,

Yet I am Lord Barnard’s man.’

Then he’s cast off his hose and shoon,

Set down his feet and ran,

And where the bridges were broken down

He bent his bow and swam.

‘Awake! awake! thou Lord Barnard,

As thou art a man of life!

Little Musgrave is at Bucklesfordberry

Along with thy own wedded wife.’—

He callèd up his merry men all:

‘Come saddle me my steed;

This night must I to Bucklesfordberry,

For I never had greater need.’

But some they whistled, and some they sung,

And some they thus could say,

Whenever Lord Barnard’s horn it blew:

‘Away, Musgrave, away! …—

‘Methinks I hear the threstle cock,

Methinks I hear the jay;

Methinks I hear Lord Barnard’s horn,

Away, Musgrave, away!’—

‘Lie still, lie still, thou little Musgrave,

And huggle me from the cold;

’Tis nothing but a shepherd’s boy

A-driving his sheep to the fold.’

By this, Lord Barnard came to his door

And lighted a stone upon;

And he’s pull’d out three silver keys,

And open’d the doors each one.

He lifted up the coverlet,

He lifted up the sheet:

‘Arise, arise, thou Little Musgrave,

And put thy clothès on;

It shall ne’er be said in my country

I have kill’d a naked man.

‘I have two swords in one scabbard,

They are both sharp and clear;

Take you the best, and I the worst,

We’ll end the matter here.’

The first stroke Little Musgrave struck,

He hurt Lord Barnard sore;

The next stroke that Lord Barnard struck,

Little Musgrave ne’er struck more.

‘Woe worth you, woe worth, my merry men all,

You were ne’er born for my good!

Why did you not offer to stay my hand

When you saw me wax so wood?

‘For I have slain the fairest lady

That ever wore woman’s weed,

Soe I have slain the fairest lady

That ever did woman’s deed.

‘A grave, a grave,’ Lord Barnard cried,

‘To put these lovers in!

But lay my lady on the upper hand,

For she comes of the nobler kin.’

BRITTEN Songs from Friday Afternoons

1. Begone, dull care!

Begone, dull care! I prithee begone from me!

Begone, dull care! you and I shall never agree.

Long time hast thou been tarrying here

And fain thou woulds't me kill,

But, i' faith, dull care,

Thou never shall have my will.

Too much care will make a young man turn grey,

And too much care will turn an old man to clay.

My wife shall dance and I will sing

And merrily pass the day

For I hold it one of the wisest things

To drive dull care away.

2. A Tragic Story

There liv'd a sage in days of yore

And he a handsome pigtail wore

But wonder'd much and sorrow'd more,

Because it hung behind him.

He mus'd upon this curious case,

And swore he'd change the pigtail's place,

And have it hanging at his face

Not dangling there behind him

Says he, "The mystery I've found, --

I'll turn me round," --

He turn'd round,

But still it hung behind him.

Then round and round, and out and in,

All day the puzzled sage did spin;

In vain -- it matter'd not a pin --

The pigtail hung behind him.

And right and left, and round about,

And up and down, and in and out,

He turn'd, but still the pigtail stout

Hung steadily behind him.

And though his efforts never slack,

And though he twist, and twirl, and take,

Alas, still faithful to his back,

The pigtail hangs behind him.

PURCELL Verse anthems and secular songs

My beloved spake

My beloved spake, and said unto me,

Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;

The flowers appear on the earth;

the time of the singing of birds is come,

and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;

The fig-tree putteth forth her green figs,

and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell.

Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

Many are they that rise up against me.

Many there be which say of my soul,

My glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill.

I laid me down and slept; I awaked, for the Lord sustained me.

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people,

that have set themselves against me.

Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: for thou has smitten all mine enemies upon the cheekbone;

thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.

And that t'is He who hath made the round world

so sure that it cannot be moved;

'Tis He, 'tis He, 'tis He who hath made the round world

so sure that it cannot be moved;高歌欢颂,赞美赞美。

And how that he shall judge the people righteously.

And how that he shall judge the people righteously.

Alleluia.

Alleluia. Amen.

An Evening Hymn

Now, now that the sun hath veil’d his light

And bid the world goodnight;

To the soft bed my body I dispose,

But where shall my soul repose?

Dear, dear God, even in Thy arms,

And can there be any so sweet security!

Then to thy rest, O my soul!

And singing, praise the mercy

That prolongs thy days.

Hallelujah!

Music for a while听个曲子

Music for a while,听个曲子,

Shall all your Cares beguile,

Wond'ring how your Pains were eas'd,

And disdaining to be pleas'd,

Till Alecto free the Dead,

From their Eternal Band;

Till the Snakes drop from her Head;

and the Whip from out her Hand.

Debussy: Trois chansons de Charles d’Orléans

1. Dieu! qu’il la fait bon regarder

Dieu! qu’il la fait bon regarder

la gracieuse bonne et belle;

Tousjours sa beauté renouvelle.

Par de ça, ne de là, la mer

nescay dame ne damoiselle

qui soit en tous bien parfais telle.

C’est ung songe que d’i penser:

Dieu! qu’il la fait bon regarder.

God, what a vision she is

God, what a vision she is;

one imbued with grace, true and beautiful!

For all the virtues that are hers

everyone is quick to praise her.

Who could tire of her?

Her beauty constantly renews itself;

On neither side of the ocean

do I know any girl or woman

who is in all virtues so perfect;

it’s a dream even to think of her;

God, what a vision she is.

2. Quant j’ai ouy le tabourin

Quant j’ai ouy le tabourin

sonner pour s’en aller au may,

en mon lit n’en ay fait affray

ne levé mon chief du coissin

en disant: il est trop matin

ung peu je me rendormiray:

Quant j’ai ouy le tabourin

sonner pour s’en aller au may,

jeunes gens partent leur butin;

De non chaloir m’accointeray

A lui je m’abutineray.

Trouvé l’ay plus prouchain voisin

Quant j’ai ouy le tabourin

Sonner pour s’en aller au may,

En mon lit n’en ay fait affray

ne levé mon chief du coissin.

When I hear the tambourine

When I hear the tambourine

sound, calling us to May,

in my bed I remain calm,

not lifting my head from the pillow

saying, "It is too early,

I’ll fall asleep again."

When I hear the tambourine

sound, calling us to May,

the young jump from partner to partner

not even bothering to remember you.

From him, I’ll move on,

finding a lover that’s conveniently close by.

When I hear the tambourine

sound, calling us to May,

in my bed I remain calm,

not lifting my head from the pillow.

3. Yver, vous n’estes qu’un villain

Yver, vous n’estes qu’un villain!

Esté est plaisant et gentil

en témoing de may et d’avril

qui l’accompaignent soir et main.

Esté revet champs bois et fleurs

de salivrée de verdure

et de maintes autres couleurs,

par l’ordonnance de nature.

Mais vous, Yver, trop estes plein

de nége, vent, pluye et grézil.

On vous deust banir en éxil.

Sans point flater je parle plein:

Yver, vous n’estes qu’un villain!

Winter, you’re nothing but a villain

Winter, you’re nothing but a villain!

Summer is pleasant and nice,

joined to May and April,

who go hand in hand.

Summer dreams of fields, woods, and flowers,

covered with green

and many other colors,

by nature’s command.

But you, Winter, are too full

of snow, wind, rain, and hail.

You should be banished!

Without exaggerating, I speak plainly—

Winter, you’re nothing but a villain!

FAURÉ Cantique de Jean Racine

Verbe, égal au Très-Haut, notre unique espérance,

Jour éternel de la terre et des cieux ;

Que tout l'enfer fuie au son de ta voix ;

Word of God the most high, our sole hope,

eternal day of the earth and heavens

as we break the silence of the peaceful night

divine saviour, look down upon us.

Imbue us with the fire of thy great mercy

so that hell itself will flee at the sound of your voice

disperse the sleep which leads our languishing souls

to stray from the path of righteousness.

O Christ show your favour to your faithful peo ple

who have come together to worship you

receive the praises that they offer up to your immortal glory

and may they come back laden with the gift of your grace.

Geistliches Lied

so sei vergnügt mein Wille!

Was willst du heute sorgen auf morgen?

Der Eine steht allem für,

der gibt auch dir das Deine.

Sei nur in allem Handel ohn Wandel,

steh feste, was Gott beschleußt,

das ist und heißt das Beste.

Amen.

Do not be sorrowful or regretful;

Be calm, as God has ordained,

and thus my will shall be content.

What do you want to worry about from day to day?

There is One who stands above all

who gives you, too, what is yours.

Only be steadfast in all you do,

stand firm; what God has decided,

that is and must be the best.

Amen

Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen

Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen, Herr Zebaoth!

Wohl denen, die in deinem Hause wohnen, die loben dich immerdar.

How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of Hosts!

My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising Thee. (Psalms 84:2-3, 5)
