Guitarist/composer Lawrence Ku has been a dominant force on the jazz scene in China for over ten years. Born and raised in Los Angeles California, Lawrence has made China his base of operations since 1997, first in Beijing, now in Shanghai. A versatile musician, Ku can be seen performing on stages small and large all over China and abroad in his own projects or as a sideman. His trio, featuringEJ Parker on bass and Nicholas Mcbride on drums is a fine example of the modern jazz trio: steeped in tradition, but always pushing and exploring new creative territory.
Bassist EJ Parker hails originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but has been living in Shanghai for over 8 years. One of the most versatile bassists in town, EJ swings hard and grooves harder, whether on the upright or electric bass. Drummer Nicholas Mcbride is a native of Canberra, Australia, and has made Shanghaihis home for many years. Known for his deep groove and finesse on the drum set, Nicholas is the first call drummer for all types of musical situations.
The trio will be performing music from Ku’s recently completed and recorded Pictures Suite, a collection of compositions that represent several musical still lifes of the fascinating city of Shanghai, from its densely packed streets of pedestrian chaos, to the quiet tree-lined lanes of the old French Concession, to its pulsing and frantic night life.
