The Jiang Zhou Drum Music refers commonly to the popular and traditional percussion music of the county of XinJiang (known as Jiang Zhou in ancient time) in Shanxi Province. At the beginning of the Tang Dynasty it was widely known as the "King of Qin’s army front line battle music" and it became the statemusic during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty. During that period it was played to encourage the troops in battles.
The Jiang Zhou Drum Music has been passed down for more than one thousand years of Chinese history， preserving its original form but also ameliorating over time to become a remarkable and popular percussion music. It has been recorded by the Asia/Pacific cultural centre ofthe UNESCO in the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" and， by the Chinese State Council， on the list of the first batch of "NationalIntangible Cultural Heritage".
The drums are the core of the performance. Once they start playing， a powerful roar of thunder explodes through the venue. Piao Dongsheng once acclaimed， "“A percussion group with a core of drums as the only components of a concert was always a subject of wonder to all the musicians， and it is the people of Jiang Zhou that have solved the question.”
The drummers use sticks to beat the drums at variable angles， speeds， forces， and rhythm to produce a rough， unrestrained， and powerful sound. In combination with the gongs， cymbals， castanets and the movements of the drummers’ bodies， it composes a musical language with various colors which isable to express the very peculiar feeling of the primal life on the Yellow Earth of China.
"You aren't beating the drums; you are beating my heart.""Your percussive beat is the echo of the loftly feeling of our people...""The sound of these drums are the palpitation of our earth; it's the sound of the nation’s deep breath."
——Feng Jicai (The standing committee member of the ChinesePeople‘s Political Consultative Conference， Chairman of the ChineseFolk Literature and Art Association， Executive Vice-chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles)
“The world’s most exquisite drums in China， the best drums in Shanxi， the best drums， only from Jiang Zhou.”
——Malaysia “Nanyang Siang Pau”
“Incredible， he who doesn’t appreciate this art， must be an idiot.”
