“Mandala” is found in cultures around the world, from the whirling dance of Sufi monks in Dervish monasteries and the Rangoli floor painting in Hindu culture to the stained glasswork found in cathedrals in Europe. In Tibetan Buddhism beliefs, the mandala aids concentration, and is a tool for purification and healing. The late psychoanalyst Carl G Jung believed that the mandala, as an art form, is part of the individuation process. In this physical theatre performance, the mandala is a metaphor for daily reflection, especially reflections of life in an urban environment. Mandala portrays the different stages of life a typical urban person may go through. The story of the urban people is represented visually on stage through the drawing of the 3-metre-wide rice mandala and the performers who dance in the big tanks of water on stage after traveling through a hectic urban life.
IN SOURCE THEATRE-An Inspirational and Spiritual Theatre
Founded on the 3rd September 2001, In Source Theatre (IST) aims to produce high-standard theatrical pieces that are inspiring and contemplative for audiences at home and abroad. IST emphasizes the continual physical training of its actors and teamwork as a regular ensemble.
IST aims to develop and put in practice aesthetic principles and philosophy of humanism through physical theatre. The company believes in the absolute involvement of our actors in order to construct theatre as an interlude during which performers and guests can experience transcendental spirituality while raising aesthetic appreciation to higher levels. Using the training from the tradition of Jerzy Grotowski in our actors’ physical training and voice work, IST strives to create lyrical works that elaborate and refine an understanding of the exhilarating combination of philosophical, sensual and psychological elements in theatre.
With an emphasis on simple elegance and accessibility, we hope to create timeless works that build on elements of indigenous Asian performing arts within contemporary theatre.
